PLANT CITY The Florida Strawberry Festival board has decided against replacing recently retired General Manager Patsy Brooks – at least for now.
The board will not seek a replacement for Brooks, who retired June 2, because the remaining 17 or 18 staff members have said they can handle the workload, festival President Gary Boothe said. The supervisors have told the board, "This is a team effort and we can pull this off," he said.
Three department heads have jointly assumed leadership, Boothe said. They are Lee Bakst, who is in charge of advertising and sponsorships; Ellany Johnson, who is in charge of the office; and Dale Goodall, who is the head of maintenance.
Brooks, who declined to comment on her retirement, was with the festival 33 years, including 13 years as general manager.
The festival is Plant City's premier event and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
The 2009 festival is Feb. 26 through March 8.
