Lucky Youngster Awarded Summer Camp Scholarship

PLANT CITY - Close encounters of a zoo kind are in store this summer for one Plant City youngster. At an end-of-the-year award ceremony at Burney Elementary School in Plant City, Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham presented kindergartner Dialyan Jenkins with a scholarship from the Lowry Park Zoo School for a one-week summer camp experience.

Dialyan and other camp participants will go on zoo hikes and enjoy interaction with zoo animals and zookeepers. The program allowed Higginbotham and other county commissioners to select one student in his or her district for the scholarship. On hand to witness the award were Dialyan's mother, Danielle Jenkins and his sister, D'Ashlyn.

Erica Clark, education/volunteer supervisor at the Zoo School, the educational arm of Lowry Park, surprised Dialyan and his classmates by bringing a barred owl and a 5-year-old alligator to Burney.

Area Students Make USF Dean's List

PLANT CITY - Two University of South Florida students with local ties have been named to the Lakeland dean's list for spring semester.

Kimberly Blake of Dover is a student in the USF College of Education. Shelly Wetterstroem of Plant City is a student in the university's College of Business.

Boys & Girls Club To Offer Tasty Fundraiser

PLANT CITY - Mark your calendar and get an early start on the Labor Day holiday: The Plant City Boys & Girls Club is planning its third annual barbecue fundraiser for Aug. 28. Residents and businesses can help by buying a meal or sponsoring the event.

Meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Union Station Welcome Center, 102 N. Palmer St. Delivery is available for lunch orders of 20 or more.

Cost is $10 per meal.

The Boys & Girls Club provides many services to the community such as providing youngsters with an alternative to gangs. It teaches its members how to resist gangs, and the club works with law enforcement and parents on antigang strategies. The goal is to make club members "gang proof."

Keysville Resident Gets Vet Tech Scholarship

PLANT CITY - Jami Bender completed her veterinary tech program at Hillsborough Community College and received the college's veterinary technology scholarship at the 15th annual National Pet Week dinner at the Tampa Airport Marriott.

The scholarship is sponsored by the Hillsborough County Veterinary Medical Society and the Hillsborough Animal Health Foundation.

Debbye Turner, a CBS veterinary correspondent and the 1990 Miss America, was the keynote speaker at the dinner May 3.

Bender received her associate of arts degree at HCC in 2002 and is a graduate of Plant City High School. She and husband, Matthew, live in Keysville with their "pet" family. She is employed at veterinarian Jennifer Conner, Plant City.

Plant City Lions Auxiliary Installs New Officers

PLANT CITY - A potluck covered dish dinner at the home of Nora Butler was enjoyed by the Plant City Lions Auxiliary and their spouses on May 27.

Afterward, a brief meeting took place, followed by the installation of officers. The new officers include President Jean Ann Davenport, Vice President Pat Carter, Treasurer Nancy Burke, Secretary Ann Crumpton, Chaplain Ruby Jean Redman and Historian Silvia Dodson.

Lions director emeritus, orientation chairman and membership/orientation chairman for Lions District 35R, Bob Fulks, officiated the installations.

Durant High Grad Gets Master's At UCF

PLANT CITY - Tristan S. Hunter, the son of Brenda and James G. Hunter of Lithia, graduated in May from the University of Central Florida, College of Business in Orlando with his master's degree in accounting.

He plans to become a Certified Public Accountant and is a full-time employee for the CPA firm of Felsing, Rankin & Co. of Maitland.

He graduated from Durant High School in 1999.

Club Recognized At State Convention

PLANT CITY - Members of the Woman's Club of Plant City recently returned from spring convention in Orlando. Club member Vivian Devlin was selected as the GFWC Florida Federation of Women's Clubs' representative for leadership training that will be held in July in Chicago.

Alise Sollenberger, immediate past president of the Plant City Woman's Club was installed as the District 8 director for 2008-10.

The club received special recognition for its major contributions to the Making Dreams Come True, the Kids with Cancer Scholarship fund. Also, recognition was awarded for leadership and membership and the club received the Judith Lutz Interaction award for participation in projects with the Plant City Junior Woman's Club.

Club member Judy Roney received first-place awards for poetry and short-story writing. Her writings will be submitted for competition at July's international convention. Other recipients of awards for arts and crafts included Nancy Smith, Janice Burrows, Judy Zaring, Judy Roney and Marilyn Day.

Plant City High Graduate Gets Bachelor's Degree

PLANT CITY - Plant City High School graduate Amy Rayburn was presented her bachelor's degree in mathematics at the spring commencement ceremony at the University of Maryland - Baltimore County on May 22.

She attended the University of South Florida and served in the Navy for six years, and is employed by Verizon.

Her mother, Sue Moos, and aunt Shelby Bender traveled to Baltimore to attend the ceremony. She is married to Jesse Hulsizer, a student at the College of Computer Engineering at the university. The couple live in Baltimore.
