Published: June 7, 2008

PLANT CITY - The Plant City Recreation and Parks Department is offering several classes at the Planteen Recreation Center, 301 Dort St., and adjacent Winter Visitors Center, 403 N. Dort.

Specially geared toward the Hispanic population is Della's Turbo Blast. This class has three instructors specializing in a different exercise genre. High energy aerobics using weights, stepping and Latin rhythms choreographed to dance moves create a total body workout. This class meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Winter Visitors Center. Cost per class is $5. For information, call (813) 764-3608.

Zumba with instructor Patty Sanchez will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays; 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the Planteen; and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Winter Visitors Center. The classes are for ages 13 and older. Zumba is a cardiovascular dancing exercise that utilizes beats from Latin music.

Belly dancing with instructor Mary Jane Aguilar is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays at the Planteen. Cost is $35 for an eight-week season or $5 for a single walk-in. The class is designed to teach the basics at a beginner level with concentration on movement and the isolation of movements, body condition, dance, posture and balance. For information, call (863) 682-6009.

Tai chi quan with instructor Joe Crossfield is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Winter Visitors Center. The cost is $5 per class. Mind, body and soul can be enhanced with instruction in this form. For information, call (813) 685-1211.

In addition to these classes, the recreation and parks department offers classes in jazzercise, senior aerobics, tae kwon do, country line dancing, quilting, bridge and teen nights. For a complete listing, go to plantcitygov.com and look under the Planteen Recreation Center.

Many Involved In 'Brigadoon'

PLANT CITY - In addition to the cast of 58 singers, dancers and actors who will be on stage to present Plant City Entertainments' production of the musical "Brigadoon," there are many others involved in staging the play.

Jennifer Jackson is the director with Shirley Outen as assistant director and Courtney Kyle is stage manager and production assistant.

Musical director Nick Folkes is working with the singers and an orchestral ensemble of Ann Wood, piano; Susan Miller, viola; Emily Trogolo, violin, Kelly Jones, cello; and Roy Holton; keyboard and pipe organ. Because no Scottish tale would be complete without a bagpipe, Greg Nicolosi will play.

Cindi Harris is choreographer with Sarah Mitchell as her assistant. Chip Sorensen is set designer; Betty Roney, costumer; and Dodie White, projects coordinator.

The play will be presented at the Cornerstone Center, 315 N. Collins St., July 18-20, 25 and 26.

Book For Discussion Available At Library

PLANT CITY - The next book that will be discussed at Bruton Memorial Library is "Girl from the South" by Joanna Trollope. Copies of it are available at the library, 302 McLendon St.

The discussion will be at 11 a.m. July 1 and is free. For information, call the library at (813) 757-9215.

Store Will Aid Animals With Special Events

PLANT CITY - The UPS Store and the Hillsborough County SPCA are teaming up to help those who cannot speak for themselves. For those who are not familiar with the name, SPCA stands for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Each year thousands of animals are brought into local animal shelters. They are often neglected and need help.

From Monday through June 14, The UPS Store, 117 W. Alexander St., will collect donations for the SPCA. Items such as pet treats, food, new toys, collars, blankets and dog bowls are needed.

The UPS Store will offer $1 off UPS shipping to anyone who brings in a donation.

In addition, from 10 a.m. to noon June 14 SPCA will be at the store with animals available for adoption.

For information, call Debbie Siebenthal at the store, (813) 754-5533.
