PLANT CITY - The city may have scrapped plans for a July Fourth celebration at the municipal stadium, but there's another local Independence Day tradition that will carry on.
Plant City Elks Lodge No. 1727 will hold its fundraising July Fourth barbecue as it has for about 25 years.
The lack of a local holiday celebration could boost sales, Elks barbecue chairman Mike Moore said.
"With the city canceling its July Fourth event, we might see even more people buying dinners than last year," Moore said.
Last Independence Day, the Elks served more than 900 dinners, Elks Exalted Ruler Frank Labarbera said.
Moore said crews will arrive at 5 a.m. and cook until closing.
"We will have about six people working on the grill to cook up a good meal," Moore said. "Visitors can eat the meal in the comfort of our dining room. Or if they like, they can take it home or to a family picnic in the park."
Other activities will include drawings for dine-in customers, Moore said.
Charities benefited by the barbecue include the Elks Children's Camp, the Elks Children's Hospital, and the Elks Foundation and retirement home, Moore said.
Food will be available for dine-in or take-out from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 4 at the lodge at 1501 N. Alexander St., just south of Interstate 4.
Each adult dinner will consist of one-half chicken, baked beans, coleslaw and bread, Moore said. The cost is $7 for adults. A child's portion is $3.50. Ladies of The Elks will sell desserts for an additional charge.
For tickets or information, call the lodge at (813) 752-8669.
