PLANT CITY - The owners of Dinosaur World want to rezone land that will more than double the theme park's property.
The family-owned park north of Interstate 4, off Branch Forbes Road, covers 8.8 acres. About two years ago, the owners purchased a 12.3-acre parcel west of the park for $909,300. Last week, the family's company, Jurassic Valley, filed a request with Hillsborough County to rezone the property from residential to commercial.
Phil Waldron, a land-use and development consultant for Dinosaur World, said the larger parcel would be used for a new entrance, expanded parking, restrooms and offices.
Waldron said the construction on the improvements will begin as soon as the county gives full approval.
"We are looking for a starting time before the end of the year," Waldron said.
The 10-year-old park features life-sized models of dinosaurs and other displays.
