PLANT CITY - An event previously delayed by the success of its participants, the Canon Tennis Challenge of Tampa Bay, has been rescheduled for Nov. 7 and 8.
Top American pro tennis players Mardy Fish and John Isner will play each other in an exhibition at the tennis court at the Walden Lake home of Mayor Rick Lott, who helped organize the charity fundraiser. Originally the event was set for May, but Fish's victory over world No. 1 Roger Federer required that Fish play in an event that same weekend in Italy.
Now with both players' schedules cleared, fans can enjoy a Nov. 8 match-up. Sponsors can take part in a meet-and-greet party Nov. 7.
Fish has defeated three top 10 players this year and is in the top 50 overall. Isner is the eighth-highest-ranked American player. As a doubles team, Fish-Isner took the championship at the recent pro event in Newport, R.I.
Proceeds from the Plant City fundraiser will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event is looking for sponsors to ensure its viability. Various sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging in price from $250 to more than $1,000.
Sponsors can attend the Nov. 7 VIP party with the players and will receive promotional benefits.
For information or to inquire about sponsorship, contact Rhett Rollyson at (813) 719-0158.
Gates will open at 1 p.m., with opening matches featuring area high school standouts and pro and amateur players. The main event should start about 7 p.m.
Fish lives in Tampa, making it possible to lure him to play in Plant City. He won the Olympic Silver Medal in 2004.
Lott lives at 3200 Polo Place.
Tickets to the matches cost $100 and include food, music and beverages.
