Photo Archives, WUSF Share War Documentary Award

PLANT CITY - Plant City Photo Archives and television station WUSF, Channel 16, have won a 2008 Silver Telly Award for the documentary "Plant City Goes to War."

The 30-minute documentary, about several Plant City residents who served in World War II, was produced by Mark Schreiner and Andrew Nichols.

There were 14,000 entries from around the world. Only 7 percent of the entries receive this distinction.

The documentary includes interviews with Plant City veterans John Germany, David E. Bailey Jr., Lonnie Davidson, Phil Patrinostro and brothers Edmund "Ted" and Harrison Covington.

There will be a special showing of this award-winning film at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Photo Archives exhibit gallery, 119 N. Collins St. The showing includes a wine-and-cheese reception. Nichols and Schreiner will be on hand to discuss the documentary.

Admission is free to photo archives members and $10 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.

Former House Speaker Talks Politics On Radio

Whether it's offshore drilling or nuclear power, former House Speaker and lawyer Johnnie B. Byrd Jr. will take your questions each week on Tampa radio station WGUL, 860 AM. His program, "Johnnie Byrd's Weekend," airs from 11 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

The theme is a political week in review of local, state and national political issues with Byrd, the show's host, his law partners, Howard Stitzel and David Barnhill, and their guests.

The show's guests have included Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, state representatives and county commissioners.

Mark Your Calendar For Monthly Market

Leo Watson, president of the East Hillsborough Art Guild, reminds all that Aug. 9 is the monthly downtown arts, crafts and antiques market. The event, which also includes produce, will be held from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the municipal parking lot at Reynolds and Palmer streets.

Plant City Grad Receives Everest Scholarship

Sophia Sutorus, a 2008 Plant City High School graduate, received a $5,000 scholarship to attend Everest University in Brandon. She will study for a career in criminal justice/forensic science. Nationwide, 1,100 students received scholarships from the Florida Association of Post-Secondary Schools and Colleges.

She is the daughter of Terry and Dawn Sutorus of Plant City and the granddaughter of Marjorie Williams of Lakeland. She also has a sister, Sonya.

Alzheimer's Support Group To Have Seminars

An Alzheimer's support group at First Baptist Church of Plant City will hold seminars the second Tuesdays monthly through November. The sessions will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church, 503 N. Palmer St. The first one is Aug. 12.

Stefanie Thompson, program specialist for the Alzheimer's Association-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, said the seminars are for family members, friends and caregivers. Topics will include medication and the disease process, personal frustrations and early funeral planning.

Just Add Worms For Composting

Master Composter Lynn Barber wants to teach you how to turn kitchen scraps into fertilizer by using composting worms. All ages are invited to this class to be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Bruton Memorial Library, 302 W. McLendon St.

Participants will make and take their own worm bin (worms included).

Deadline Looming For Church Program

Thursday is the deadline for the annual Bible Adventure Day at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2104 Mud Lake Road. The event, from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Aug. 16, is for children from kindergarten through sixth grade. The "Rain Forest" is the setting for this Bible journey.

Pancake Breakfast To Benefit Boys Soccer

The Plant City FC Lancers U15 Boys soccer team pancake breakfast fundraiser is from 7 to 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at Plant City Elks Lodge, 1501 N. Alexander St. The cost is $5, team official Sheila Wiersma said.

UPS Driver Honored For 25 Years Of Service

Carolyn Barnes of Plant City has been honored for completing 25 years of service with UPS. She is a preload/air driver with the company in Tampa and began her career in 1983.
