A Big Surprise! Guess Who Came To Cooking School?

PLANT CITY - Lynne Halleran, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, volunteers at a cooking school, where she had a special surprise July 10.

While she was helping a student cut up a whole chicken, the chef interrupted and asked her to assist a new visiting student.

She turned around, and there stood her husband, 1st Lt. Kevin Halleran, who had just flown in from Kuwait. His best friend and the staff at the cooking school helped plan the surprise.

Halleran has been at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait since June 2007 and is with the 160th Signal Command, U.S. Army Reserve.

Last month he received a medal for meritorious service.

Karate Students Win Big At Competition

Students from Plant City's Chris Welbon Karate Clubs returned recently from Albany, N.Y., where they competed at the Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Championships.

Competitors came as far away as Hawaii and Puerto Rico after qualifying at each state and regional tournaments.

Here's a list of the students, including their ages and category awards: Emmarie Gaudet, 7, second in kata and first in kumite; Blake Wolford, 7, fifth in kata and fourth in kumite; Abby Wolford, 9, third in kata and kumite; Tyler Richart, 10, second in kata and first in kumite; Kyle Austin, 11, fifth in kata and first in kumite; Holly Wolford, 12, first in kata and kumite; Kyle Queenan, 12, third in kata and second in kumite; Chris Wilson, 13, fourth in kata and second in kumite; Michael Wilson, 15, fourth in kata and kumite; and Brent Fry, 15, third in kata, kumite and kobudo.

Chris Welbon is the instructor.

Local businesses that helped contribute to the 2008 season included Publix, Richter Engineering, Turley's Machine Shop, Ferman Chrysler Jeep, Byrd & Stitzel P.A. and Southern Environmental.

Children Get Look At Business World

Ten students at Walden Lake Early Learning Center got a peek behind the scenes recently at local businesses in Lake Walden Square plaza.

Sweetbay Supermarket provided a tour and treats, the UPS store had a fun packing session, and CiCi's Pizza gave them lunch.

Debbie Siebenthal, at the UPS store, said the businesses are happy to offer tours for the community.

Class Of '58 Together Again

Members of the Turkey Creek High School graduating class of 1958 held their 50th reunion May 16 at Red Rose Inn & Suites. Attending were 31 classmates (there were 65 in the class) and their spouses.

A moment of silence was held for the 12 members who have died. The group plans to meet monthly from now on.

Turkey Creek High graduated its last class in 1972. Its former campus is the site for Turkey Creek Middle School.

Happy 90th Birthday To Marie Kelsey

Marie Kelsey of Plant City will celebrate her 90th birthday on July 31. She has been in Plant City most of her life and has been an active volunteer at St. Clement Catholic Church and South Florida Baptist Hospital for more than 25 years.

Her family includes children Maud Marie, John, Steph, Joanne, Ron and Johnny, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Local Students Shine At Springfield College

Sylvia Fluellen of Plant City earned a bachelor of science in human services in May from Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Another Springfield student, Marian Seege, also of Plant City, was named to the dean's list for academic excellence for the spring term. She is majoring in human services.

Real Estate Firm Has New Broker

Keller Williams of Plant City has announced a new team leader and broker, Patrick Thurmond, has joined the business.

He has more than a decade of experience in real estate and is a golfing and fishing enthusiast.

State Woman Of Year In Agriculture Sought

Nominations are being accepted for the state's 2008 Woman of the Year in Agriculture award, spotlighting the vital role of women in Florida agriculture.

Hillsborough County's Gertrude "Trudy" Carey won the award in 1997.
