Former Bishop To Speak On Healing, Help, Hope

PLANT CITY - PLANT CITY - The Rev. Lavern Franzen, former bishop of the Florida-Bahamas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will be guest speaker July 13 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2104 Mud Lake Road.

Franzen will preach and preside at both worship services that day, contemporary worship at 9 a.m. and traditional worship at 10:30 a.m.

He will be speaking on "Healing, Help and Hope," a ministry of Lutheran Services of Florida, a shared social service ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

On June 25, the church held a senior picnic on church grounds. The event offered information on community programs, hurricane preparedness, home health needs, pharmacy and insurance information and other services.

Three middle school students were confirmed in a service June 1. The confirmation followed catechism instruction. Confirmed were Brandon Hastings, Matthew Perry and Allison Thomas.

Cork United Methodist Plans Youth Activities

Cork United Methodist Church, 4815 W. Sam Allen Road, has special activities this summer for elementary school children and teens.

The schedule for this month includes Wild and Wacky Wednesdays for both groups by the Crosseyed Youth Ministry of the church. On July 16, the elementary group will have "Treasure Within," a pirate day. The event is free. Children must bring their own lunches but snacks will be provided. Drop off is 8:30 a.m. and pick-up at 6 p.m.

The teens on July 18 will go to Adventure Island from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information on the cost can be obtained by contacting the church by phone or e-mail.

The elementary program continues July 30 with "Out of This World," a space day. There is no charge and lunches must be brought but snacks will be provided. Drop off is 8:30 a.m. and pick-up, 6 p.m.

County Seeks Moral Courage Nominees

Do you know someone or who challenged the actions of government in order to make a difference for citizens?

A civic group concerned with the principles of right and wrong?

You can nominate them for the Hillsborough County Commission's 2008 Moral Courage Award, which honors exceptional ethical standards and moral courage by an individual or group.

Nominations for the 2008 award are due by 5 p.m. Friday. Applications are available by calling the county's Communications Department, (813) 307-8383, or from the county's Web site at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/ bocc, click on Special Awards, and then click on Moral Courage. Anyone may submit a nomination, and all residents of Hillsborough County are eligible.

Commissioners created the award in 1992.The Citizens Advisory Committee will review the nominations and recommend a finalist to the Board of County Commissioners. The winner will be announced during a commission meeting in August.

Past winners include Doug Erwin, who brought to light mismanagement of school construction and maintenance funds from the Hillsborough County public school system and various civic groups and individuals who have spearheaded efforts to clean up landfills, started an affordable housing program, fought a power line planned across northern Hillsborough and helped conserve water.

Employees Association Holds Annual Picnic

The Strawberry Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association held its annual picnic June 5 at Medard Park south of the city off Turkey Creek Road.

More than 30 members feasted on food prepared by the members and barbecue from Rick's Meats.

Joining the chapter members were guests from other chapters and Don Stewart, president of the Florida Federation.

Membership in the association is open to active and retired federal employees in the area, including Polk County. Those interested may call Bob Lemley, chapter president, at (863) 607-4844.
