Mavericks Player Scores 28

PLANT CITY - Correlle Prime scored 28 points last week as his Mavericks stayed unbeaten with a 57-51 win over the Sonics in Plant City Recreation and Parks Department/Optimist Youth Basketball action.

Prime's output was the highest single-game total for any player in the first two weeks of play, which saw the Mavericks as well as the Rockets get to 3-0 starts. Dazmond Patterson added 20 points in the Mavericks' victory, and the Rockets got 19 from Miles Tombrink and 17 more from Andrew Orso in defeating the Nuggets 62-46.

In other action last week in the Premiere Boys League (14- to 16-year-olds), the Braves went to 2-0 by edging the Trailblazers 39-38. Mohammad Hajaz scored 17 points.

A pair of squads won Jan. 19 to take over first place in the Cadet League (8- and 9-year-olds). The Dolphins topped the Panthers 27-21, with Steve Witchoskey scoring 15 points, and the Grizzlies also were 3-0 after their 23-14 defeat of the Otters.

Two of the Cadet teams played to a football-like score: The Bears beat the Colts 24-7. Joe Merrin had 10 points.

The Pistons went to 2-0 by topping the Cougars 26-22 (Michael Falkentstein scored 14) and the Bullets received 13 points from Henry Yoho in a win over the Tigers.

In the Junior Boys (10- and 11-year-olds) age group it was the Spurs and Raptors off to 3-0 starts. Jacob Hemphill had 10 points to guide the Spurs by the Lakers 34-28, and Kensey Davis scored eight along with six each from Demarko Russell and Quenton Williams in the Raptors' 31-15 victory over the Hornets.

In the lone Junior Boys game Jan. 19, Clayton Fultz had 12 points as the Bucks edged the Clippers 31-28 despite 18 points from Tyrik Johnson.

Both Junior Girls (10- and 11-year-olds) League's games last week were two-point affairs, with the Sting and Jazz getting wins. In the Senior Girls (12- and 13-year-olds) group, the Comets broke into first place with a narrow 33-32 win over the Suns.

In Senior Boys (12- and 13-year-olds) activity, the Kings improved to 3-0 with a 32-13 win over the Raiders. Going to 2-0 were the Coyotes, who got 19 points from Brennan Smith in beating the Wizards 39-36.
