PLANT CITY - Caleb Gregory scored 14 points as the Grizzlies beat the Tigers 21-4 on Jan. 12, becoming the first team with a 2-0 record in the Cadet League of the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department/Optimist Youth Basketball program.

The Grizzlies had previously played a weekday game, while most Cadet League (8- and 9-year-olds) action is played Saturdays at the Plant City Family YMCA.

In other games Jan. 12, the Dolphins got past the Otters 26-23, with Travis Riley scoring 10 points. Jamal Jenkins had 10 for the Otters.

Also off to 1-0 starts were the Panthers and Pistons; Austin Eldridge's 16 points led the Panthers to a 33-21 win over the Cougars, and the Pistons topped the Colts 22-6.

After losing to the Grizzlies, the Bullets took on the Bears, winning 30-21.

Through one week of play in the Senior Boys (12- and 13-year-olds) League the Hawks were out to a 2-0 start, winning Jan. 10-11.

The Hawks rolled the Raiders 36-6, getting at least three points from seven scorers, then stopped the Warriors 39-27 as James Perry scored 12 points and Joe Davis had 10. Jalen Butler scored 27 for the Warriors.

Two teams won their first two contests in the Premier Boys (14- to 16-year-olds) League.

The Rockets rolled up 80 points, the high mark by far for the season in any age group, with Cody Fliehman getting 22 in a defeat of the Jayhawks, who got 27 points from Zack Batley. Also at 2-0 were the Mavericks, who got 24 from Dazmond Patterson in edging the Nuggets 52-48.

The closest game last week came between the Sonics and Heat. Bryan Elliott scored 26 points as the Sonics beat the Heat 54-52.

On Jan. 26, all youths ages 8 to 13 are eligible to compete in the Optimist Tri-Star competition at the Tomlin Middle School gym. The gym opens at 1:45 p.m., with competition set to begin at 2.

Boys and girls will compete separately in single age groups, with awards given in each age group for first through third places. The event is free to enter.
