Published: January 16, 2008

PLANT CITY - John McCaughey was a man with a thousand ways to make his point and 1,000 friends who gained a great deal by knowing him.

McCaughey, who died of heart failure Dec. 17, was the senior district secretary to state Rep. Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City. He was 67.

McCaughey's wife, Susan, and her family are inviting the public to a celebration of his life Feb. 2. The event is planned for 1 to 3 p.m. at the John R. Trinkle center at Hillsborough Community College's Plant City campus, 1206 N. Park Road.

"We would be honored if you would join us in celebrating John's life, sharing memories of an altruistic, gentle man with a big heart and an even bigger sense of humor," his family wrote in the invitation announcing the event.

McCaughey, former dean of student services at the campus, had a heart attack Dec. 14. He never regained consciousness, Glorioso said.
McCaughey joined Glorioso's team three years ago after the former Plant City commissioner won his first term in the state House.

"John was smart - a self-starter, a problem solver, a listener," Glorioso said last month. "When people would call my office with any problem - from adoption to taxes - he knew all the ropes and could handle any situation. You couldn't ask for a better person. John had a huge heart."

Cori Cuttler, a legislative aide to Glorioso, worked with McCaughey daily. She said last month that McCaughey's office was his world away from home. Others on the staff were fortunate to share in his world, she said.

"I will miss John every day," Cuttler said.

Besides his wife, McCaughey is survived by a son, a daughter and two stepchildren.
McCaughey was a past president of the Plant City Kiwanis Club, frequent volunteer at United Food Bank & Services and many other charitable organizations.

"John was a man with rapport with every governmental agency in the area," Glorioso said. "He was perfect for the job. We have lost a great addition to the community."
