League's Tipoff A Tight Thriller

PLANT CITY - The first night of action in the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department-Optimist youth basketball season included a barnburner of a game.

The Cavs edged the Sonics 51-50 Jan. 7 in the second game of the Premier League (ages 14 to 16) schedule. Richard J. Glorioso scored 16 points, and Teshey Thompson scored 14 for the Cavs, while Bryan Elliott and Jorge Medina combined for 42 of the Sonics' points.

In the first game at Marshall Middle School, the Braves bested the Bobcats 40-28. On Jan. 8, Cody Fliehman, Adrian Nelson and Andrew Orso each scored in double figures as the Rockets beat the Heat 59-48. Josh Davis scored 15, and Kentray Timmons had 14 for the Heat. The Mavericks beat the Trailblazers 45-29.

The Junior and Senior Girls leagues got started last week as well. It was down to the wire in one Junior (ages 10 and 11) contest as the Liberty edged the Jazz 22-20. Madison Bradshaw and Dominique Dixon scored six apiece for the winners. Cacey Simmons had 12 points as the Sting won the other game, 20-16, over the Nets. Those were played at the Plant City Family YMCA.

In the Senior (ages 12 to 14) league at Tomlin, Cathleen Evans had 13 points for the Suns in a 34-23 win over the Wildcats, and the Comets got past the Stars 30-22, with CeCe Fussell putting in 14.

Both games in the Senior Boys (ages 12 and 13 ) league on the first night were decided by six points. Abdon Lopez had 20 points for the Eagles in a 29-23 win over the Warriors, and Brennan Smith scored 12 to lead the Coyotes past the 76'ers 25-19.

Although the bulk of the Cadet League (ages 8 and 9) games are played on Saturdays, two were contested Jan. 8. Nicholas Shinn scored 10 points, and Caleb Gregory and Matthew Masburn eight each as the Grizzlies beat the Bullets 33-26. Christian Rivers scored eight as the Otters beat the Bears 20-9.
