Published: January 9, 2008

PLANT CITY - Jan Henrick's legacy as a caring, loving wife and teacher lives on each year when Hillsborough County students receive an award named in her honor.

The Jan Henrick Achievement Award was established by Henrick and her husband, Kevin Bohn, in 2002 to honor students who overcome obstacles to achieve better grades, attendance and gain a positive attitude. Bohn, along with Rick Henrick, her brother, presented 12 Plant City High School students the award and a $150 gift card to Wal-Mart on Dec. 15 and explained why they were chosen.

Henrick, a former guidance counselor at Walden Lake Elementary and swim coach, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 and died Feb. 4, 2004.

Students were nominated by teachers and screened to meet the criteria. Sherrie Mueller, guidance resource specialist at Plant City High, said the 12 students will be recognized in May during the annual Awards Day Program.

Winners included Devon Brewster, Aciel Binzha, Yajaira Gasca, Charles Lucas, Marissa Ordaz, Pablo Monzon, Jose Sanchez, Feda Shalabi, Sade Silverio, Joaquin Torres, Xavier Vega and Brittney Yates.
