Basketball Set To Tip Off; Soccer Signups Start

PLANT CITY - The 2008 Plant City Recreation and Parks Department/Optimist youth basketball season gets under way next week, as does registration for the upcoming youth soccer campaign.

Basketball play is set to tip off Monday at the Tomlin and Marshall middle school gymnasiums, with games in both the Senior Boys (ages 12 and 13) and Premiere Boys (14 to 16) leagues. There are 10 teams in the newly-created Senior Boys age group, which will have its games at Tomlin on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Marshall will host the Premiere League contests on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The youngest age group, the Cadets (ages 8 and 9), has the most teams at 12. Most of the games are held Saturday mornings but two are played Tuesdays, all at the Plant City Family YMCA. Also playing at the Y are the Junior Boys (10 and 11) with one game Saturdays and the rest Mondays and Thursdays.

Both girls' leagues have their action on Tuesdays, with the Juniors (10 and 11) competing on the smaller YMCA courts and the Seniors (12 to 14) at Tomlin.

Signup for soccer begins today and runs through Feb. 13. Youths 4 to 18 as of June 1, 2008, are eligible to play. The seven-game season is played at the Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex and runs from late March through early June. Each team holds one practice per week.

The registration fee is $22, which includes a jersey and accident insurance. Birth certificates are required unless participants were involved in the past year's flag football or basketball programs.

This will be the 32nd season for the soccer program.
