Derby's Big Fish Record Smashed

PLANT CITY - A 14-year-old boy recently set a record for heaviest fish caught at Plant City's Kids All American Fish Derby.

Cody Henderson's 6-pound, 6-ounce mudfish broke the record by a pound. City Recreation and Parks director Jack Holland said he didn't know what the Plant City boy used for bait.

The previous record was a 5-pound, 6-ounce catfish caught in June.

The derbies have been held two or three times a year for about 12 years and include fishing and a casting contests. The anglers compete in such categories as the first person to catch certain types of fish and the most fish caught.

About 150 young anglers took part in the Feb. 2 derby at a city pond behind Plant City Stadium.

The youngsters who took home trophies at the derby, including the weight of their catch where applicable, are:

•First bass caught, 14-year-old Clayton Patton, 2 pounds, 2 ounces

•First catfish caught, 11-year-old Bradley Trout, 2 pounds

•Largest bass caught, 10-year-old Cole Arn, 3 pounds

•Largest fish caught in 6- to 10-year-old group, 8-year-old Shelby Farmer, 3 pound, 8 ounce mudfish
•Most fish caught, 6- to 10-year-old age group, 6-year-old Alex Ray, eight

•Henderson won honors for largest fish in his 11- to 15-year-old age group.

•Most fish caught in 11- to 15-year-old group, 13-year-old Drake Wyatt, 10

•In the casting contest for the 6- to 10-year-old group, winners were Madison Selgert, 8, champion; Jordan Baker, 10, second place; and Emily Minton, 9, third place.

•In the casting contest in the 11- to 15-year-old group, winners included Lanae Burton, 11, champion; Bradley Trout, 11, second place; and Christy Pullins, 12, third place.

The derbies are organized by the Recreation and Parks Department.
