PLANT CITY - Things are busy at the Plant City Family YMCA, 1507 YMCA Place.
The organization recently launched its 2008 annual giving effort, the Building Strong Kids Campaign. This year's fundraising goal is $110,000. All money raised in the campaign stays in Plant City to help make YMCA membership and programs possible for children and families who could not otherwise afford to participate.
Jack Holland is serving as campaign chairman and David Miller is the major gifts committee chairman. Serving with them is a team of volunteers who will be soliciting gifts from businesses and individuals through February.
The Plant City Civitan Club recently contributed $500 to the campaign.

Young people in grades 6 to 12 and their parents came out for an open house Tuesday to learn about the YMCA Leaders Club, a service and leadership organization for youth. Club members were on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

The local YMCA recently welcomed two members to its board of directors, Charles Closshey and Steve Nierman.
Closshey, a longtime YMCA member and donor, is a volunteer for several Plant City and Lakeland organizations including the Carpenter's Home Church and Victory Church.
Nierman is the chief administrator at South Florida Baptist Hospital. He is a member of the Lions Club of Plant City and a member of the governing board for the American Cancer Society and the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce.
Plant City Club Holds Art Show
PLANT CITY - The Woman's Club of Plant City recently held its yearly club art show. First-place winners will be eligible for the District VIII Woman's Club Show on Friday at the Dade City Woman's Club building.
First-place winners at the District VIII competition will be eligible for the Woman's Club State Show in spring.
First-place winners at the Plant City show include Jan Burroughs, oil and mixed-media collage; Judy Roney, charcoal drawing and knitting; Marilyn Day, hand-woven basket; and Ann Cole, flower arranging and machine quilting. Winners other than first place include Judy Zoring, knitted children's sweater and knitted doll outfit; Josie Azorin, acrylic painting; and Nancy Smith, beaded collar and needlepoint evening bag.
Ladies Night Out Will Deal With Heart Health
PLANT CITY - The next Ladies Night Out seminar will be Heart Health: Small Changes Make Big Differences.
It will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the administration conference room of South Florida Baptist Hospital, 301 N.. Alexander St., Plant City.
Speakers will be Steve Smith, a physician of internal medicine; Terri Colletti, a registered nurse and critical care manager; and Sara Markham, a registered dietitian.
The session is free, and a light dinner will be served. Registration is required and may be made by calling (813) 754-4444.
The seminar series is sponsored by the hospital and the South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation.
Shoebox Float Deadline Monday
PLANT CITY - Children in first through sixth grades have until Monday to register to take part in the shoebox float competition that will be part of the 2008 Florida Strawberry Festival.
Floats made of shoeboxes are judged on originality and craftsmanship.
In order to qualify, participants must use a cardboard shoebox no larger than 13 inches by 9 inches with decorations not exceeding 14 1/2 inches tall. Motorized decorations are not allowed. Suggested materials to use include origami paper, cloth, foil and petal paper.
Competition will be in four groups: first- and second-graders, third- and fourth- graders, fifth- and sixth-graders and an exceptional education group in which all grades can participate.
Application forms can be picked up at the festival administrative office, 2202 W. Reynolds St. Applications also can be found at www.flstrawberryfestival.com.
Completed floats must be brought to the festival's main exhibit building between 2 and 6 p.m. Feb. 26. Participants must have their name, telephone number and grade level on the bottom of the float.
First-, second- and third-place winners will receive trophies.
Entries will be on display Feb. 28 to March 9 for the run of the festival.
Rally For The Cure Golf Event Tees Up
PLANT CITY - The Country Meadows Women's Golf Association will hold a Rally for the Cure golf tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday.
A field of 50 players is expected for the rally. A closest to the pin contest will be held on a designated par 3 hole.
Titleist golf balls bearing the pink ribbon breast cancer awareness symbol will be awarded to players who hit the green on the first swing. A prize will be given to the player whose shot lands closest to the hole.
This is the fifth year the club has pledged its support to the cause. This year's organizer is Josephine Cain.
Bogart In Florida Film To Be Shown At Library
PLANT CITY - The Florida on Films series at Bruton Memorial Library, 302 McLendon St., continues at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The film to be shown stars Humphrey Bogart and tells the story of "a storm of fear and fury in the sizzling Florida Keys." Licensing arrangements do not allow the library to publish the film's name, library Director Anne Haywood said.
Following the film, scholars Bob Ingalls and Susan Fernandez will lead a discussion of the film and how Florida's land and people are depicted.
Florida on Film is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council and the Friends of Bruton Memorial Library.

Open House To Mark 90th Birthday
PLANT CITY - An open house honoring the recent 90th birthday of Evelyn Gibson, wife of Hubert Gibson, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Plant City Living Center, 403 E. Damon St.
Friends and family are invited to attend. It is requested that no gifts be brought.
Ballards Have Granddaughter
PLANT CITY - Jerry and Patsy Ballard of Plant City have a new granddaughter to brag about.
Abigail Marie Beck was born Jan. 4 at Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin, Ga., to the Ballards' daughter, Susan, and her husband, Robby Beck of Milner, Ga.
The other grandparents are Bobby and Pat Beck of Meansville, Ga.
County To Honor Strawberry Festival
Led by District 4 county commissioner and Plant City native Al Higginbotham, the board of county commissioners will honor the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World and the Florida Strawberry Festival at the commission's Wednesday meeting.
The Plant City area produces most of the nation's midwinter strawberries on more than 8,320 acres.
The commission will also honor strawberry queen Kristen Elise Smith and her court, festival directors, city commissioners, the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Strawberry Growers Association.
The county commissioners meet at 9 a.m. in the Fred B. Karl County Center at 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.
