PLANT CITY - Keith Dawson made it a bigger party than initially expected Wednesday, becoming the second member of this year's Plant City High Raiders football team to announce his collegiate playing plans.
Mark Popek's commitment to the University of South Florida has been known for more than a month. Popek's signing party turned into a bigger event, though, as Dawson was awarded a scholarship to Jacksonville University.
The running back, who shared time with Sirchauncey Holloway in helping guide the Raiders offense this year, joins a program that started less than 10 years ago. Dawson may have a shot at making some immediate impact; Jacksonville University did not have a running back go over the 500-yard mark last season.
Dawson's former backfield mate won't be running for the Raiders next season, it appears. Holloway, who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards despite playing in about half of his team's games because of an injury, has transferred to Armwood.
Plant City coach Kevin Kelley said the void left by Holloway leaves the Raiders with no obvious starter next year at the key position of tailback.
Popek was an offensive tackle for the Raiders.
