PLANT CITY - The Florida Strawberry Festival ranked 35th among the top 50 largest fairs in North America, a trade Web site said.
With 550,000 visitors in 2008, the festival was just ahead of the Florida State Fair in Tampa, where attendance was slightly more than 490,000. Other Florida fairs to make the top 50 list included the Miami-Dade County Fair and Expo, 600,000 visitors; and the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach, 598,000 visitors.
The largest fair in the country was the Texas State Fair in Dallas, with 2 million visitors, according to Matt's Carnival Warehouse, a Web site that tracks fairs, carnivals and other special events. Its Web address is www.carnivalwarehouse.com.
The festival also was ranked 35th by Venues Today magazine, general manager Paul Davis said.
Davis said he was happy with the ranking, and he called the strawberry festival "an outstanding entertainment value."
