Paper Or Plastic? Faculty Members Bag $1,000 For Supplies

PLANT CITY - About 15 Plant City High School faculty members raised about $1,000 for school supplies recently by volunteering to bag groceries at the Sweetbay Supermarket on Alexander Street near the school.

The grocery store donated to the school 10 percent of the value of the groceries bagged by the faculty members. Two students handed out fliers to shoppers promoting the two-hour fundraiser, said Sherrie C. Mueller, guidance resource specialist at Plant City High.

Students Agree To Say No To Drugs

Students at Shiloh Elementary Charter School signed a drug-free contract during Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 20 to 24. During the week, students wore red polo shirts on Monday, crazy socks on "sock-it-to-drugs" Tuesday, caps on "put-on-a-cap" Wednesday, team jerseys on "team-it-against-drugs" Thursday and sunglasses on "shade-out-drugs" Friday.

The classes came up with the slogans. Two Ms. Florida USA winners joined the school for a walk-a-thon on the last day of the week. The fundraiser brought in more than $20,000, which will be used for classroom computers and reading programs.

Shop Until You Drop At Hospital Benefit Sale

The annual South Florida Baptist Hospital Parking Lot Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Century 21 office at 1905 W. Baker St. Quality, like-new items, arts and crafts, baked goods and plants will be featured. Vendor space is available for a $10 fee.

All fees raised will benefit the hospital's Team Member Emergency Assistance Fund. Vendors will keep all money earned by the sale of items. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call Candy Greene at (813) 764-2258 or (813) 763-4124 for information.

Local Actress Lands Role On NBC's 'ER'

Congratulations to Tammy Hunter of Plant City, who has booked a prime time television acting role, her first. She is scheduled to appear on NBC's "E.R." in an episode that airs after the first of the year.

The actress, who began as a stage manager with Plant City community theater, moved to Los Angeles and studied full time with an acting coach. She also studied with Connie Broskette and Venue Acting Studio in St. Petersburg. She is managed by Diversified Talent in Los Angeles and is represented by Darren Fromal of Oscar Winston Talent.

Dallas Bull Shows Off 2009 'Calendar Girls'

The Dallas Bull, a popular bar part-owned by Plant City businessman Ed Verner, has released its 2009 calendar that includes a photo of former Florida Strawberry Festival queen Summer Pippin, among others. This is the third year the nightclub has published its calendar.

The club boasts performances by entertainers such as Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn. It has been called "Tampa's most popular nightclub" and hosts about 20,000 visitors each month.

The calendar, created with Floyd Publications, will be available starting Dec. 15 online at www.dallasbull.com or at the club at 3322 N. U.S. 301. Models for the calendar, which include some of the club's employees, are shown posing at the nightclub with a Western theme.

Schools Combine To Present Play

There will be a lot of drama at Tomlin Middle School auditorium Dec. 11 to 14. Newsome High School Performing Arts, Plant City High School Drama Department and Durant High School Drama Department will present "Pippin" at the Tomlin auditorium, 501 N. Woodrow Wilson St.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Dec. 11, 12 and 13 and 2 p.m. Dec. 14. Tickets are $15, $10 and $7.

Get A Jump On Fitness Resolution

Get an early start on fitness for 2009 by joining a class sponsored by the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department. Available classes include belly dancing, tae kwon do, zumba, baton, senior aerobics, Turbo Blast (high-energy aerobics using weights and dance moves), Jazzercise and line dancing. There is a minimal fee.
