A Busy Fall Sports Schedule Has Begun

PLANT CITY - The busy fall sports schedule is here, with the golfers getting into the swing of things first.

Golf meets were scheduled for earlier this week. On Thursday afternoon at River Hills, Durant's home course, the Cougars will take on rival Plant City. Both the girls and boys will square off beginning at 3 p.m.

Plant City plays its first three matches on the road before hosting Lennard and Bloomingdale on Sept. 4.

However the word "host" is used loosely for the 2008-09 Raiders team. Its matches will be played at Buckhorn Golf Club in east Brandon because of construction at the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club in Plant City.

"It has nothing to do with the facilities at Walden Lake, it's just the renovations," Raiders boys golf coach Gary Brady said.

Buckhorn is about 15 minutes from Plant City High, south of State Route 60 on Miller Road.

Of the three prep seasons, fall, winter and spring, none has more sports than the fall, with football and volleyball the marquee attractions joined in competition by golf, swimming and cross country.

Cross country is the latest to get started, with the first meet for Durant and Plant City taking place at Newsome High School at the Sept. 16 East Hillsborough Invite.

Volleyball tips off Tuesday. Durant is at Brandon and the Plant City girls go to Armwood. Both are at home for the first time Sept. 4.

Swimming starts on Tuesday forDurant, which hosts Lennard at the Brandon Swim and Aquatic Center. Plant City's first meet comes when it hosts Brandon and Armwood on Sept. 4. The Raiders have their home meets at the Plant City Family YMCA.

Junior varsity football also plays a six-game schedule beginning Sept. 11.
