PLANT CITY Ground was broken recently for the first Plant City location of a restaurant chain that bills itself as an alternative to fast food.
A 3,500-square-foot Zaxby's will be built on James L. Redman Parkway, between Sonic Drive-In and Regions Bank. There are more than 440 Zaxby's in 12 Southern states, including one in Valrico.
The restaurant will offer sit-down dining and drive-through service. The Athens, Ga.-based casual dining chain built its business on "providing freshly-prepared chicken fingers, Buffalo wings, sandwiches and more in a fun, relaxing atmosphere," a company statement said.
The Plant City location is scheduled to open at the end of the year.
A building permit for the Zaxby's, for $460,000, was one of the largest pulled in July, according to Plant City building division records. In all builders pulled permits for slightly more than $4.9 million in construction during the month.
