Peers Pick Podiatrist As Baptist Hospital's Chief Of Staff

PLANT CITY - Martin T. Girling has been elected by his peers at South Florida Baptist Hospital as the new chief of staff. The West Point, N.Y., native has been in Florida almost 20 years and maintains a podiatry office in Plant City.

He and his wife, Sue, have two sons and a daughter.

The 147-bed South Florida Baptist is at 301 N. Alexander St.

Resident Graduates From Basic Training

Army Pfc. Miles Lenhart, son of longtime Plant City resident Carole Lenhart, graduated Aug. 15 from Army basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

He will return to Plant City in time to join his senior class at Plant City High School. He is undecided on his plans for the military after graduation; he will either begin active duty or join the Army Reserve, his mother said.

Festival Queen, Court Guests At Meeting

Reigning Florida Strawberry Festival queen Kristen Smith addressed the Plant City Civitan Club recently on her and her court's achievements.

She was joined at the meeting by two court members, Amanda Sparkman and Jaclyn Raulerson.

Court members Shaunie Surrency, first maid, and Britney Balliet could not attend because of prior commitments with schooling.

"All of the young ladies have a great future ahead of them and have accomplished much in their commitment and devotion to their community, family and church," Civitan President Pat Pogue wrote in a news release. "They are excited about their year and the special events they have attended and taken part in since being crowned the first part of this year.

"The Plant City community is very proud of these young ladies, and they represent us well with their values."

The club meets the first and third Thursdays monthly at Orange Blossom Tea Room. Pogue said the Civitan's mission is to build good citizenship by serving community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Hospital Team Members Named For July, August

Martha Dunbar, an environmental services technician, has been named July team member of the month at South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Karen Halverson, a clinical nurse II in labor and delivery, has been named the August team member of the month.

Plant City Does Well At Awards Ceremony

Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful recognized individuals, groups and businesses, including ones with Plant City connections, at its annual awards event Aug. 8 at the Rusty Pelican restaurant.

The organization coordinates the Great American Cleanup and Coastal Cleanup every year.

Husband-and-wife team Jeff and Andria Keene received the Most Committed Site Captains award.

Jeff Keene, a teacher who started out at Brandon High School and transferred to Tomlin Middle School, has served as a site captain for the organization for the past five years.

This past year, his wife helped recruit more than 306 middle and high school students who picked up 5,160 pounds of trash.

Plant City's Robert and Betty Campbell received the Most Committed Adopt-a-Road award. They have removed an estimated 960 pounds of trash from Son Keen Road since September 2007.

Neighbors Larry and Virginia Tharrington accepted the award for the Campbells, who could not attend.

Former Resident Has Role In Film

Pietro D'Alessio, formerly of Plant City, has a role in a short comedy, "A Death in Progress," currently airing online.

There is also the opportunity for viewers to vote and rate the film.

Suicide Prevention Advocate To Speak

It's a meeting no one hopes they ever need to attend, but for those who have lost a child or someone close to them, the Plant City bereaved parents support group meeting can help heal the pain.

Bonnie McCullen, a bereaved parent and an advocate for suicide prevention, will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 meeting.

The meeting is at the community room at South Florida Baptist Hospital, 301 N. Alexander St. A question-and-answer session is at 8 p.m.
