PLANT CITY Ever dreamed of being a certified judge of barbecue, be it ribs, chicken, brisket or pork?
Fred Johnson, Owen Johnson and their Johnson's Barbecue restaurant will again host a judges' school to help usher in the sixth annual Plant City Pig Jam State BBQ Championship which, last year, drew 81 teams from across the country.
Stephen Smith, a master judge for the Kansas City Barbecue Society, is scheduled to teach the class from 6 to 10 p.m., Oct. 19 at the restaurant, 1401 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Plant City. The cost is $50 for members and $75 for others. The nonmember fee includes a one-year membership in the society.
Students certified by the society become eligible as judges at more than 200 events the organization sanctions annually.
The number of judges needed for the Nov. 22 Pig Jam will depend upon the number of teams that enter, but 90 were required for last year's event, said Marion Smith, president of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the judging school in conjunction with the Johnsons and their restaurant.
Enrollment is limited to 30 For information or to register, contact Smith, (813) 754-3707 or marion@plantcity.org.
