PLANT CITY - Back to school means back to the prep sports schedule, and student athletes are pretty much hopping right into it.
On Monday, practices were able to begin for football, volleyball, swimming, golf and competitive cheerleading. Next Monday, the cross country teams will be allowed to start working out.
For the teams at Plant City and Durant high schools, the first practices turn into a tryout situation for many.
At Durant, tryouts are Monday for swimming and cross country. Those interested in swimming should report to the Durant High gymnasium at 3:15 p.m. Cross country will hold its tryouts on the track at the same time.
All paperwork must be filled out prior to the tryouts; paperwork is available in the school's main office.
Information about tryouts at Plant City High wasn't immediately available.
Golf will be the first season to get under way, with matches scheduled on Aug. 25.
Football's regular season kicks off Sept. 5, with Plant City and Durant squaring off on the Cougars' home field. Before that, both teams have a preseason tilt set to kick off Aug. 29. Durant is at Gaither while Plant City will host Tampa Bay Tech.
The swimming, cross country and volleyball seasons start in September.
