Byrd Family Welcomes Return Of Veterans To Nest

PLANT CITY - Navy Lt. Melane Byrd, daughter of Melane and Johnnie B. Byrd Jr., recently returned home from a seven-month deployment to the Persian Gulf with the aircraft carrier USS Truman in Virginia Beach, Va.

Her parents and her sisters, Amanda and Sherer Byrd Falardeau, were on hand to see Byrd fly her F-18 in formation with her squadron. Also, Falardeau welcomed home her husband, Navy pilot Lt. J.P. Falardeau, who was also stationed onboard the USS Truman.

All Invited To Network At Business After Hours

The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours has become a popular business networking event. Members of the chamber host this event monthly, but you do not have to be a member to attend.

Plant City Photo Archives hosted the last one, where guests were treated to wine, cheese, sweets and live music. The next one will be from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Chili's restaurant, 3001 James L. Redman Parkway.

Naval Academy Graduate Hails From Plant City

John and Sharon Dicks of Plant City attended the U.S. Naval Academy graduation of their son Jarod this summer in Annapolis, Md.

A 2004 Plant City High School graduate, Dicks, commissioned into the Marine Corps, is in training in Quantico, Va. The next stop, sometime after January, will be in Pensacola, where he will begin Marine aviator flight training.

The couple's other son, John, also joined the family for the big event. He is a student at the University of Florida's law school and pursuing a master's degree in business administration.

Sharon and John Dicks will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on Tuesday.
John Dicks is one of the Democratic candidates running for Congressman Gus Bilirakis' seat.

Plant City Student Makes Dean's List

Matthew Mullinax of Plant City was named to the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va.

Chamber Forming Next Leadership Class

Amy Nizamoff of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce reports that the chamber's 2008-09 leadership class will begin in less than two months.

The program helps prepare current and future community leaders for the decisions that must be made as the city grows and develops.

Classes will take place in various locations throughout the city. Space is limited.

UT Graduate Joins Levin Financial Group

Kyle Madden, a New Hampshire native and recent graduate of the John H. Sykes School of Business at the University of Tampa with a degree in finance, has joined the professional staff of Levin Financial Group in Tampa. He is the insurance specialist for the agency, part of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.

He is a member of the Tampa Club, South Tampa Chamber of Commerce, South Tampa Youth Leaders and Executives Club, and The Producers Young Professionals group.

Plant City Woman Celebrates 90th Birthday

Marie Kelsey of Plant City celebrated her 90th birthday Thursday.

She has lived in Plant City most of her life and has been active with St. Clement Catholic Church and South Florida Baptist Hospital.

Her family includes daughter and son-in-law Maud Marie and John Santucci of Cooper City, daughter and son-in-law Joanne and Ron Olvey of Temple Terrace, daughter Steph and son Johnny; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
