PLANT CITY - Taylor Edgemon, Jared Smith and Cleyton Morris continue to out-punt, pass and kick the competition. They now may get a chance to try their skills on a bigger stage.
The three Plant City youth were winners Oct. 6 at the sectional level of the NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick Competition. If their scores are among the best five of the sectional winners in the state, they will qualify for the team competition.
That would mean a chance to perform at Raymond James Stadium during halftime of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Jacksonville Jaguars game Oct. 28.
The local competition was held at the Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex on Sept. 29. Those winners advanced to the sectional competition, held at the Buccaneers training facility.
Edgemon, in the 8- and 9-year-old girls competition; Smith, in the 12- and 13-year-old boys division; and Morris, in the 14- and 15-year-old boys competition, all placed first in their age groups.
The Punt, Pass & Kick program is a national skills competition for boys and girls ages 8 to 15. The program was established in 1961 and is the oldest NFL Youth Football program, according to its Web site.
