Youth Football Players, Cheerleaders Have Winning Ways

PLANT CITY - The Plant City Dolphins youth football players and cheerleaders are on a roll.

Two of its cheerleading squads took home trophies, including one for first place, competing against teams across the region at Sunday's Stampede Cheerleading Competition in Wesley Chapel. Today, three of the teams will compete in the West Coast Youth Football Conference's Super Bowl in Brandon.

The Dolphins were formed in 1975 and play home games at the Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex in a season that lasts from July to December. It has football teams and cheerleading squads for different age groups.

At Sunday's cheerleading competition, the Dolphin Mascot cheerleaders won a first-place trophy and Super Midgets cheerleaders won third place.

The Dolphins' Flyweight, Super Midget and Midget football teams will compete in today's Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl appearance is a milestone for Rabul Cantu, head coach of the Super Midget team, who has come full circle with the organization. He began playing for the Dolphins in the late 1970s and has continued through the years as a coach to his nieces and nephews and now his children.

Registration Set For Baby Parade
PLANT CITY - There's a new location for signing up for the baby parade at the Florida Strawberry Festival.

Registration will be Jan. 26 at Planteen Recreation Center, 301 Dort St. Doors will open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 a.m. The baby parade will be held at the strawberry festival grandstand March 8.

Each entry must be made in person and accompanied by a nonrefundable $25 entry fee with checks payable to the GFWC Plant City Woman's Club. Babies entered in the parade must reside in east Hillsborough County, east of U.S. 301. The parent or guardian registering the child must have proof of residency.

Entries are limited to the first 50 children in each of the age groups: 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. The age of the child is as of Jan. 31.

The registration was moved from the Plant City Woman's Club because more space was needed, said Jodi Smith, who is helping organize the parade.

Holiday In The Park, Bealsville Style

PLANT CITY - The Bealsville Recreation Center, 5009 Nesmith Road, will have a holiday celebration at 10 a.m. Dec. 8.

Holiday in the Park will include face painting, toy giveaway, drawings for bicycles and free food. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.

Association To Celebrate Child Center Expansion

PLANT CITY - Redlands Christian Migrant Association will hold an open house and dedication at 10 a.m. Monday to show off its newly expanded child care center off Sam Allen Road.

The association's Sam Allen Child Development Center is at 2701 De Montmollin Road. Redlands Christian provides child care and early education for about 1,600 children of migrant and rural low-income families in Hillsborough. The special guest at Monday's dedication will be state Sen. Ronda Storms.

The Sam Allen Child Development Center recently underwent a 2,800-square-foot expansion that opened 32 more slots for children. The center accommodates up to 52 children, infants to 5-year-olds.

The association was founded in 1965 in the Redlands farming area of Miami-Dade County to provide children of migrant workers a safe place to go while their parents worked in the fields. The association, which expanded into Hillsborough County in 1974, serves nearly 8,000 children in 21 Florida counties.

The Redlands organization has a regional office in Plant City.
