PLANT CITY - A tough road victory has earned the Durant High volleyball team a chance to have home-court advantage today, with a trip to the Final Four theirs for the taking.
Durant roared back after losing the first game to defeat Sickles High 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 in a thrilling match Tuesday at Sickles. Sickles came into the match with a 23-4 record.
In Orlando on Tuesday, Edgewater High School knocked off Olympia High, the team that had beaten Edgewater in its district championship match. Because Edgewater was a district runner-up, Durant hosts today's region final match at 2 p.m.
The winner is headed to the state semifinals. The 6A semifinals are scheduled for Friday at The Lakeland Center; the state championship match is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 17.
Durant has won two state championships but was not considered a candidate to claim this year's title. Tuesday's win at Sickles changed that outlook.
