PLANT CITY - The comedy "The Mouse That Roared" is being staged by Plant City Entertainment, the area's community theater. The play opened Friday, and performances continue tonight, Friday and Nov. 17. Curtain time is 8 p.m.
Cornerstone Center is at 315 N. Collins St. in downtown Plant City.
The play deals with a small European nation in dire financial straits. It decides to declare war on the United States and thus, when defeated, become eligible for money America pours into conquered nations.
Brittney Anderson plays Gloriana XII, the country's ruler. Other cast members include Tom Thoeni, Julynn Celadilla, Tom Mitchell, Betty Roney, Kristen Woods, Judy Barta, Shannon Mack, Amy Bailey, J.J. Cothron, John Harrer, Maggie Carlisle, Richard Sebastian, Daniel Roberts, Joe Paquin, Bob Mroczkowski, Joe Osborn, Tom Guerre, Laura Warren, Kay Secord, Phi Wortz and Frances Hardee.
Directing the play is Tyler Hollis, and Lou Baird is stage manager.
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for ages 55 and older and students through 12th grade. Tickets are available at the door on a space-available basis or may be purchases in advance at Hardee's Fashions, 1501 N. Wheeler St., (813) 754-4929.
Homecoming Queen Crowned At Durant High
PLANT CITY - Senior Jasmyn Hendricks was crowned homecoming queen last month at Durant High School. She is the daughter of Barbara Hendricks.
Jasmyn Hendricks is a "phenomenal young lady," said Courtney Singletary, reading teacher at Durant.
Other court members included Kaylee Doback, Alex Donini, Niki Hall, Kati Maxwell and Destinie Ruiz.
Hendricks, 17, was escorted at homecoming ceremonies by her grandfather Robert Hendricks Sr.
She is a member of several organizations, including National Honor Society, student government, Poetry Club and Spanish Honor Society. She is a lifelong resident of Plant City.
She has applied to several colleges and wants to major in mass communications.
She is in the gospel choir at Durant and is a member of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Bealsville.
Plant City High Student Wins Essay Contest
PLANT CITY - Johnnie Bryars Byrd III, a sophomore at Plant City High School, won the grand prize in the statewide Tony Jannus Essay Contest.
Bryars wrote an essay on the development of commercial aviation and included the accomplishments of Colleen Barrett, this year's Tony Jannus Aviator of the Year.
Bryars was presented with three Southwest Airlines tickets and $600. Barrett, president and chief executive of Southwest, made the presentation at a reception and news conference in St. Petersburg.
Past recipients of the Tony Jannus Aviator of the Year attended. Also attending were his parents, Johnnie and Melane Byrd and Sherrie Mueller, guidance resource specialist at Plant City High.
Plant City High also took second place in the statewide essay contest. Harrison Gross will receive a gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse for his essay on commercial aviation.
The contest was open to Florida students in grades six to 12.
Civitan Names New Officers
PLANT CITY - The Plant City Civitan Club had a dinner Oct. 11 at the Orange Blossom Tea Room to install new officers for the year.
The officers include Pat Pogue, president; Ann Churchwell, president-elect; Robert Christie, secretary; and Hunter Gambrell, treasurer.
The club also had an initiation ceremony to welcome two new members, Karen Bozeman and Mike Griffin. The initiation ceremony was presented by Frank Kelley, Area Four director of Civitan International.
Harold Boswell was recognized as the club's only charter member. He celebrated his birthday at the event, with the members enjoying birthday cake and singing "Happy Birthday."
Daughters Of Confederacy Meet Today
PLANT CITY - Plant City Chapter No. 1931 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy meets at 10 a.m. today at the 1914 Plant City High School Community Center, 605 N. Collins St.
The program for the month is on the Cow Cavalry Memorial exhibit dedication.

Boys & Girls Club Event To Help Fight Drugs
PLANT CITY - The West Plant City Boys & Girls Club will observe Meth Awareness Day at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Guests will include state Rep. Rich Glorioso, the Plant City Police Department's gang unit and representatives of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The event will help the community understand the dangers of methamphetamine.
Food will be served, and the public is invited. The club is at 901 S. Waller St.

Festival Queen Search Will Begin Sunday
PLANT CITY - The hunt for the queen of the 2008 Florida Strawberry Festival will kick off Sunday when a mandatory orientation meeting is held at 2 p.m. in the expo building on the festival grounds at West Reynolds Street.
All potential applicants must attend the meeting. Contestants must be between the ages 16 and 20 as of March 11. Each must have at least a 2.75 weighted grade-point average and must be accompanied to the meeting by a parent or a guardian.
Applications will be handed out at the meeting, and the number of contestants is limited to 35. Five additional applicants will be accepted as alternates in the event that any of the contestants drop out before Dec. 1.
The deadline for returning the applications to the festival office is noon Nov. 19. All applications must be hand-delivered to the festival office, and an application fee of $25 is required.
The orientation will cover wardrobe rules, general rules and regulations, and a schedule of events leading up to the pageant competition. The pageant will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Tomlin Middle School. Tickets to the pageant will go on sale at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at Tomlin.
The festival is looking for businesses interested in donating merchandise for contestants, the queen and her court. For information, call Jodi Smith, (813) 757-8574.
Plant City Man Is Best Bus Driver
PLANT CITY - Plant City's Robert Whitfield received the Driver of the Year Award from the Florida Public Transportation Association at an Oct. 23 banquet in Orlando.
Whitfield, a driver for HART, has been driving for the authority more than 26 years. He joined the agency in June 1981 and is a two-time recipient of HART's driver of the month award.
In 1988, he became a member of the National Safety Council Million-Mile Safe Driver Club for driving more than 1 million miles without being involved in a preventable accident. In April, he achieved his 24th year of safe driving at HART.
Whitfield and his wife have a daughter, a son and two grandsons.
Young Professionals Group Meets Thursday
PLANT CITY - The recently organized Bailey-Eastman Group of young professionals interested in preserving the history of Plant City will meet at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the Plant City Photo Archives, 119 N. Collins St.
The new group is an adjunct of the photo archives and is seeking pictures of the community from the 1970s and 1980s.

Library Plans Holiday Book Sale
PLANT CITY - Mark your calendars for the Friends of the Bruton Memorial Library's Christmas book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17.
The sale will be in the Mary Noel Moody Community Room of the library, 302 McLendon St., Plant City.
The sale will feature new and nearly new books that have been donated to the Friends and selected for the Christmas sale.
