Old House A Lush Oasis

Published: December 29, 2007

PLANT CITY - Marjorie and Leon Waller of 2612 Hancock Drive were recently awarded the Plant City Garden Club's beautification award for November.

They have taken a very old house and turned it into a very new-looking home with plantings and an addition, which includes a garage with a living space above it.

The face of the home is adorned with topiary by the front door with pygmy date palm intermittently placed along the front with African iris, hibiscus, croton and mondo grass. An oasis surrounding a live oak divides the paved driveway on the right.

Moving to the back yard, which is enclosed with fencing to accommodate two resident schnauzers and visiting grandchildren, are plants in little groupings. One of those includes kangaroo fern, impatiens, angel wing begonia and asparagus fern. An old-time light sits in the middle of this display.

The back yard is also home to a birdhouse, shepherds' hooks with hanging impatiens and wispy fern laced with tiny yellow buds. The middle of the yard features potted plants with pink blooms as well as waxy-leafed dieffenbachia.

The rear of the home also features a small wrought iron table and chairs. That is surrounded with Australian tree fern, an umbrella and bleeding heart vines. Nearby, visitors will also find a collection of Marjorie's mother's pineapple plants. Her mom, Ruby Brewer, is a wonder at placing pineapple tops in the ground and having them grow into interesting and attractive plants.
