PLANT CITY - Durant High's journey to the state volleyball finals was made even more impressive by the fact that the Cougars had no superstar player.
Unfortunately, that also was reflected in the All-State team announced last week.
Durant had just one player make the top three Class 6A squads, with setter Alexa Donini getting named to the second team. No other Cougar was named among the top 18 in 6A.
Gainesville Buchholz, considered best team in Florida regardless of classification, according to high school sports maxpreps.com, defeated Durant in the title match. Half of the Buchholz lineup, Kelsey Hodge, Margaret Doyle and Shelby Bleke, made up half of the 6A first team, which had players from Countryside, Miami Killian and Orlando's Timber Creek.
Donini, a senior, was the steadying force all year for Durant and collected 638 assists.
Chelsea Morris, one of Durant's top hitters, received honorable mention in the All-State voting. Stephanie Eukovich and Kelsey Horton were right behind Morris on the team in kills.
Cougar coach Dawn Hough, in her final year leading the program, finished runner-up in the state Coach of the Year voting.
