PLANT CITY - John McCaughey, senior district secretary to State Representative Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, died Monday at South Florida Baptist Hospital. He was 67.

McCaughey, former dean of student services at Hillsborough Community College's Plant City campus, had a heart attack Dec. 14. He never regained consciousness, Glorioso said.

"I had just returned from Tallahassee on Thursday night," Glorioso said. "I was looking forward to talking with John about what we had accomplished when I received the sad news that John suffered a heart attack on Friday morning."
McCaughey joined Glorioso's team three years ago, after the former Plant City commissioner won his first term in the state house.

"John was smart - a self-starter, a problem-solver, a listener," said Glorioso. "When people would call my office with any problem - from adoption to taxes - he knew all the ropes and could handle any situation.

"You couldn't ask for a better person. He had a huge heart," he said.

Cori Cuttler, a legislative aide to Glorioso, worked with McCaughey on a day to day basis.

"The district office was John's world and he let us come into his world occasionally," said Cuttler.

"I will miss him every day."
McCaughey is survived by his wife, Susan, a son, a daughter and two step-children.

The family will make plans to celebrate McCaughey's life after the holidays.
McCaughey is a past president of the Plant City Kiwanis Club, a frequent volunteer for the United Food Bank, Friends of the Library and many other charitable organizations.

"John was my Kiwanis Club president when I won the legislative election," Glorioso said. "He asked me if he could work for me in the local office. We didn't even know what the title of the position would be. But he took it and has been wonderful. He was a tremendous person. Everybody liked John."
McCaughey worked for Hillsborough Community College from 1999 to 2003 where he was the dean of student services at the Plant City campus. Since then, he taught part time at the college. Before moving to Plant City he worked at Community College of Baltimore, from 1986 to 1999.

"John was a man with rapport with every governmental agency in the area," Glorioso said. "He was perfect for the job. We have lost a great addition to the community."
