City Will Help Stage ACC Champion Games In 2008, '09

PLANT CITY - The Plant City Recreation and Parks Department is joining hands with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission to help promote the 2008 and 2009 Athletic Coast Conference championship football games to be played in Tampa.

Applications are being accepted for presale tickets and must be received (not postmarked) by Jan. 15. Each application is limited to eight tickets. Applications and information can be found at www.ACCTampaBay.com.

Awarding of the two collegiate championship games came after a unanimous vote of the league's athletic directors and faculty athletics representatives following a seven-month bid and selection process.

"We are proud about the opportunity to not only host, but to also grow this game to a level that's befitting of the Atlantic Coast conference," said Jeff Adams, chairman of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. "Based on the overwhelming support we have received from the Tampa Bay community, we are confident that we will meet and exceed the ACC's expectations."

The games will be Dec. 6, 2008, and Dec. 5, 2009, in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the annual Outback Bowl as well as Super Bowls XXXV in 2001 and XLIII in 2009.

Community Invited to Christmas Services
PLANT CITY - The members of Hope Lutheran Church, 2001 N. Park Road, invite residents and visitors in the Plant City and surrounding communities to its candlelight Christmas services.

The services will include traditional Christmas hymns.

The scheduled services are:

Christmas Eve, 7 p.m., family-style candlelight worship;

Christmas Eve, 10:30 p.m., a traditional Christmas Eve candlelight service with Holy Communion;

Christmas Day, 10 a.m., with Holy Communion.

All services will be under the direction of Hope's pastor, the Rev. Dean Pfeffer. Music, under the direction of Christine Mansell, will feature the Jubilation Singers and Notes of Distinction, various soloists and instrumentalists.

Celebration Will Mark 80th Birthday

PLANT CITY - Earl Robert Caraway, a native and former longtime resident of Plant City, will turn 80 Christmas Eve.

Friends and family will gather at 1 p.m. Jan. 5 at Springhead Civic Center for a birthday celebration in his honor. Those who wish to attend are asked to make a reservation before Friday by calling (813) 719-9371.

Caraway was born in the Knights Station community and grew up in the Dover-Plant City area. On Nov. 11, 1950, he married Nellie "Van" Burnham and they shared 51 years of marriage. They had two sons and three daughters, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

As a young man, Caraway worked on the farm. In 1964, he went to work for Lykes Brothers meat packing, where he remained for 26 years, retiring at 62. He later moved to Lake Placid, where he lives and enjoys gardening.

USF Bulls To Host Baseball Clinic

PLANT CITY - Baseball With the Bulls, a clinic led by University of South Florida baseball staff members and players, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan 17 at Mike Sansone Park.

Preregistration is required by Jan. 11 at the Recreation and Parks Department headquarters, 1904 S. Park Road. The camp fee of $20 includes instruction and clinic T-shirt.

'Rollercoaster' Deals With Life's Ups, Downs

PLANT CITY - The Plant City Christian Women's Club invites the public to attend its Rollercoaster Life luncheon program featuring speaker-singer Pamela Tolson.

The program also includes Earlyne Simmons and John Slamen of H&R Block, who will focus on the ups and downs of taxing situations.

The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Walden Lake Golf and Country Club. The cost is $13.
