PLANT CITY - Christmas will be exciting for the Doty family. Lindsay and Donna Doty's son, Justin, 24, who has been in Fort Benning, Ga., for nine weeks of basic training in the Army, is home for a visit.
Before enlisting, he was youth-aquatic director at the YMCA in Plant City. A graduate of Plant City High School, he has a business and marketing management degree from University of South Florida.
After the holidays, he will return to Fort Benning for officer's training school.
JROTC Team Excels At Competition
PLANT CITY - The Plant City High School JROTC Drill Team participated Dec. 1 in the University of Tampa JROTC annual Lisa Pauchey Drill Meet. The cadets captured the third-place trophy in the armed drill competition and finished fourth and fifth in two other events.
More than 1,000 cadets from more than 35 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs competed. Teams were evaluated on discipline, form and execution.
Artist To Be Guest At Workshop
PLANT CITY - Tom Jones, who studied under the internationally known artist Tom Lynch and Pablo Sansequndo-Castaneda, will be the guest artist at the East Hillsborough Art Guild January workshop. He will give two days of watercolor instruction to students at all levels of artistic development.
A resident of Central Florida, Jones has work in many private and corporate collections.
There will be a door prize each day of the workshop, and each student will receive a signed print by the artist. Registration opened to the public Monday.

The guild also announced that Betty Jones has resigned as president. The guild sends her best wishes and thanks for all her accomplishments.
Tour Of Homes Includes Several Stops
PLANT CITY - The Arts Council of Plant City held its annual Tour of Homes on Dec. 9. The homes of Mark and Vicky Connor, Doug and Ruth Harsham, Dallas and Milene Powell and Carole Wright were on the tour. Judy Barta and Maggie Carlisle co-chaired the event that was attended by 314 people.
The fundraiser helps students with art scholarships and art-related field trips for underprivileged kids.
Assistant Professor Receives Honor
PLANT CITY - Valrico resident Andrew Artis received the fall Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of South Florida Lakeland. The assistant professor was presented the award by the Student Government Association. It is the highest campus-level honor for USF Lakeland faculty members. Plant City resident Amanda Robins, a senior at USF, called Artis an outstanding professor.
Club To Treat Students To Party
PLANT CITY - The Plant City Civitan Club will host a Christmas party Friday for the special education classes at J.S. Robinson School. The club has hosted a party for the students in the special ed classes for more than 30 years.
There are about 120 students in the classes, and each student will receive a gift furnished by the club. The Woman's Club of Plant City will furnish the refreshments.
Resident Elected To Honor Society Office
PLANT CITY - Mary Susan Durrell has been elected vice president of fellowship of the Alpha Gamma Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Membership is based on academic performance.
Durrell, of Plant City, is the daughter of Howard Bryant of Asheville, N.C. She is majoring in travel-tourism-hotel management at Hillsborough Community College. She plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida.
