Plant City Resident Nominated For Military Academy At West Point

PLANT CITY - A young man from Plant City has been nominated by U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Patrick Alfonso of Plant City High School was on a list along with 46 others who were interviewed by a statewide selection committee for nomination to the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy and Merchant Marine Academy.

The students were ranked according to their academic accomplishments, athletic talent and moral character.

Nominees will be notified between now and April if they are offered an appointment by the respective military academy.

Friends Share Christmas Tea
PLANT CITY - The holiday season is a special tea-time in many neighborhoods, and Barbara Corley, who lives in a historical district with her husband, Don, holds an annual Christmas tea for her female friends. This year it was held Dec. 1

Twenty guests arrived at 2:30 p.m., and picked a cup from her collection of china. They found their seat by hunting for the matching saucer. Guests ate minibiscuits with homemade fig preserves, ham salad tarts, cheese straws, sugared pecans, dates, Bing cherries and other delicacies.

Barbara Corley is the food service director at First Baptist Church of Plant City, and the couple have been married for 48 years. Two of their children live here and one is in Georgia, and a son-in-law, a major in the Army, is serving in Iraq. Two grandchildren complete the family picture.

Barbara Corley said the tea was so much fun that she will be holding another one before Christmas that will include men.

Girl Scouts Hunt For Teddy Bears

PLANT CITY - The gift of a teddy bear is like giving a hug, and that's the purpose of Operation Teddy Bear.

The event is in full swing, and Plant City Girl Scout troops are asking for help.

Girl Scouts are donating bears and other stuffed animals to organizations in eastern Hillsborough County to give to children who are victims of abuse or domestic violence.

The organizations are: Plant City Police Department, Plant City Fire Rescue and The Spring of eastern Hillsborough County.

Archives Holding Holiday Reception

PLANT CITY - The annual Plant City Photo Archives holiday reception will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 20. The event is open to all members and their guests at no charge and will include hors d'oeuvres, refreshments, music and a special holiday exhibit. Nonmembers are invited for a $10 admission fee.

Pizza And More At Free Environmental Event

PLANT CITY - Shawna Everidge, the city's environmental education coordinator, will introduce children ages 6 to 12 and parents to animals found in the Florida watershed at a program from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 24. at Bruton Memorial Library, 302 McLendon St.

There will be free pizza and children can make an animal track replica. Space is limited, so register early by calling Everidge at (813) 757-9289, Ext. 2249.
