PLANT CITY - Bruton Memorial Library and its support group, Friends of the Library, have received two grants, one from the Florida Humanities Council and one from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The library is one of 18 nationwide selected to host the Prime Time Family Reading Time series offered by Prime Time, an affiliate of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with the American Library Association Public Programs Office.
The project, which will take place next fall, is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
"We are delighted to be part of the national expansion of a project that is designed specifically for underserved families to help children bond with parents by reading and learning together," Bruton Library Director Anne Haywood said.
Prime Time, based on illustrated children's books, is designed to teach parents and children to read and discuss humanities topics and aids them in book selection and becoming active library users.
It is based on a successful series of the same name that began in 1991 at the Baton Rouge Parish Library in Louisiana and spread to surrounding states with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. More than 24,000 people have participated in more than 750 Prime Time sessions in 36 states and the Virgin Islands.
The other grant to the Friends of the Library was a minigrant from the Florida Humanities Council for an adult film discussion series, Florida on Film, beginning in January.
The four-part series will open with the program "Sunshine in the Dark: Florida in the Movies," led by Susan Fernandez and Robert Ingalls, University of South Florida professors and authors of a recent book of the same title. The series will continue one evening a month through April, with a viewing of a feature film and a discussion led by the scholars at each session.
Both of these programs are free.
