Plant City And Durant High School FFAs Compete

PLANT CITY - Members of FFA chapters at Plant City and Durant high schools were in Indianapolis from Oct. 24-27 for the National FFA convention, which included competitions in various aspects of agricultural science, business and technology.

Students from the Plant City High School chapter participated in the Food Science and Technology Career Development event.

Participants took a test, designed and formulated or reformulated a simulated food product, conducted nutritional analyses and applied food safety as well as sanitation principles.

Team members were Jarrod Burnette, Lauren Der, Chanse Huggins and Sara Beth Newsome. John Davidson was their faculty advisor.

Another Plant City High team took part in the Forestry Career Development event. They answered questions on tree and equipment identification, took a general knowledge exam and completed interactive forestry applications.

Team members were Jensen Harlow, Khristina Knight, Bryant Tindle and Selina Williams. Robert Wilder was their advisor.

Durant High School Senior Chapter was part of the Agricultural Sales Career development event. Competitors were asked to take a test and make an oral sales presentation. They also completed a series of activities demonstrating their skill at prospecting customers, promoting products, advertising and customer service.

Making up that team were Bethany Coon, Courtney Kabrich, Shawna Newsome and Michael St. Martin. Their advisor was Jason Steward.

Another Durant team competed in Livestock Career Development. Participants demonstrated their ability to grade market class steers and hogs according to U.S. market grading standards. They also evaluated classes of breeding and market beef, sheep and swine. They gave oral reasons for the selections they made.

Team members were Justin Newsome, Ryan Rice, Marshall Sewell and Westly Taylor. Charles Combs was their advisor.

Another Durant team competed in the Horse Career Development event. They were asked to evaluate eight classes of horses composed of performance events or halter classes, giving oral reasons for their selections.

Members of that team were Kyslynn Muncy, Brittney Olsen and Alex Ross. Combs was the advisor.

Megan Young represented the Durant J.F. St. Martin Chapter in the FFA Creed Speaking Career Development event. The event is designed to recognize outstanding FFA members for their ability to present the FFA creed and respond to a series of questions relating to the creed.

Young's advisor was Susan Mayo.

FFA is a national organization preparing youth for leadership and careers in agriculture.

Nutcracker Tickets On Sale Now

PLANT CITY - Tickets are on sale for Plant City Children's Theatre's annual presentation of "The Nutcracker," scheduled for two performances, 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Plant City High School, One Raider Place, just off Alexander Street.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Hardee's Fashions, 1501 N. Wheeler St., and the children's theater, 507 N. Wheeler St.

The day of the show, there will be a silent auction from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Plant City High.

Admission tickets are not required to visit the auction and items to be auctioned include tickets to Busch Gardens, Disney and other theme parks and gifts from Bealls, Outback Steakhouse and other businesses.

Teens Invited To Meeting At Library

PLANT CITY - Students in middle and high school are invited to a meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bruton Memorial Library, 302 McLendon St.

Students may tell the library staff what books, DVDs, graphic novels and PC games they would like in the library. They also will help plan and implement library activities.
